BMW R Nine T

M-E 118

Some projects are about pushing a motorcycle into the future. Others are about reconnecting it with its roots.

For this BMW R nineT, our goal was to create a machine that feels as if it could have existed decades ago, while retaining every advantage of modern engineering. Instead of transforming a classic BMW into a modern interpretation, we deliberately took the opposite approach: giving a contemporary motorcycle the timeless character of BMW’s legendary air-cooled heritage.

To reinforce this vintage-inspired identity, virtually every chrome component was refinished in black. The original gold fork tubes were blacked out, creating a cleaner, more purposeful appearance while emphasizing the muscular proportions of the boxer engine. The result is a motorcycle that feels understated, elegant, and unmistakably BMW.

A custom LED headlight with side-mounted fork brackets replaces the factory unit, adding a more aggressive and technical presence to the front end. At the rear, every detail was carefully simplified to maintain the clean and timeless lines of the motorcycle.

What makes this project particularly special is the foundation itself. The BMW R nineT already offers exceptional performance straight from the factory: modern suspension, powerful brakes, fuel injection, refined electronics, and the unmistakable torque of the air/oil-cooled boxer engine. Rather than reinventing the motorcycle, we chose to highlight its strengths while dressing it in a silhouette inspired by BMW’s golden era.

The centerpiece of the project is the beautifully sculpted fuel tank from Unit Garage, whose design pays tribute to the iconic BMW /7 models. As official Unit Garage dealers in Geneva, we selected this tank for its ability to completely transform the motorcycle’s silhouette and instantly evoke the spirit of the great BMW roadsters of the past.

The rear section was extensively reworked with a custom-modified subframe allowing the installation of our signature seat cowl design, usually reserved for our BMW K-series projects. Combined with a bespoke handcrafted saddle, the rear profile becomes lighter, sharper, and more cohesive while preserving everyday usability.

The custom black Unit Garage exhaust system completes the build, perfectly matching the dark aesthetic while enhancing the character of BMW’s iconic boxer twin.

The result is a motorcycle that feels both familiar and unique. A modern machine with the soul of a classic. A tribute to BMW’s heritage without the compromises of vintage ownership.
