BMW R65

M-E 122

A Hidden Gem from BMW’s Airhead Era

Introduced in the late 1970s and refined throughout the early 1980s, the BMW R65 occupies a unique place in BMW Motorrad history. While its larger siblings such as the R80 and R100 often stole the spotlight, the R65 offered a more compact, agile and accessible interpretation of the legendary BMW boxer platform.

For this project, our goal was not to radically reinvent the motorcycle but rather to enhance the purity of its original lines while introducing a more dynamic and contemporary café racer stance.

The front end has been subtly lowered to create a more aggressive profile and a stronger visual connection between the fuel tank and the road. Combined with the minimalist rear section, the motorcycle gains a lighter, sportier silhouette while preserving the timeless proportions that make the R65 so appealing.

The result is a machine that feels equally at home parked in front of a modern design studio as it does carving through mountain roads.

The iconic BMW boxer engine remains the centerpiece of the build.

The engine and drivetrain have been refinished in satin black, creating a striking contrast with the light grey fuel tank and emphasizing the sculptural cooling fins of the air-cooled cylinders. The subtle highlights on the cylinder heads and engine details provide depth without distracting from the overall minimalist approach.

A Hattech stainless steel exhaust system complements the character of the boxer twin, delivering a deeper and more engaging soundtrack while respecting the motorcycle's classic DNA.

The cockpit has been simplified with minimalist controls, bar-end mirrors and a compact instrumentation setup, creating an uncluttered rider environment that focuses attention on the road ahead.

This BMW R65 perfectly illustrates our philosophy at Meister Engineering: respecting the soul of the original motorcycle while refining every detail to create a machine that feels both timeless and contemporary.

Powered by a 649cc air-cooled flat-twin engine, the R65 quickly earned a reputation for its reliability, smooth power delivery and everyday usability. It retained all the qualities that made BMW’s airhead motorcycles famous: mechanical simplicity, long-distance durability and a distinctive character that remains highly appreciated by enthusiasts more than four decades later.

At the rear, the motorcycle features our Meister Engineering homologated rear frame conversion, designed and certified specifically for Swiss regulations.

The shortened rear section dramatically cleans up the profile of the motorcycle while maintaining full road legality. The discreet rear lighting and minimalist license plate mounting system further reinforce the clean and purposeful aesthetic.

As with all our certified chassis modifications, the conversion benefits from DTC approval, ensuring that the motorcycle remains fully compliant for registration and inspection in Switzerland.

While the motorcycle embraces a classic aesthetic, numerous details bring the riding experience into the modern era.

The custom seat features premium diamond-pattern stitching and follows the lines of the frame with exceptional precision. Modern alloy wheels wrapped in Continental RoadAttack tires improve handling and grip while preserving a clean and elegant appearance.

At the rear, miniature 3-in-1 LED indicators integrate brake light, tail light and turn signal functions into an almost invisible package.

Elegant without being excessive, minimalist without sacrificing functionality, this R65 is a celebration of BMW's airhead heritage and a reminder that true design never goes out of style.
