BMW R80 GS
M-E 126
A minimalist rally-inspired BMW R80GS, built to go anywhere while looking unlike anything else on the road.
Starting from one of BMW’s most iconic adventure platforms, we set out to create a lightweight, stripped-back machine that captures the spirit of 1960s and 1970s rally motorcycles while preserving the reliability, comfort and versatility that made the R80GS legendary.
The overall design was inspired by classic rally and enduro motorcycles from the 1960s and 1970s. The short single seat, exposed rear fender and clean lines create a lightweight appearance while preserving the proportions that make the R80GS such a capable machine.
For longer journeys, a removable passenger seat can be mounted directly over the rear fender, allowing the motorcycle to switch between solo rally bike and comfortable two-up touring machine in just a few minutes.
The rear and front fenders were custom-made in aluminium, inspired by the shapes found on vintage Husqvarna competition motorcycles. Their simple and purposeful design reinforces the bike’s authentic off-road character.
While the styling pays tribute to the past, the riding experience is entirely modern.
The motorcycle is equipped with a fully adjustable custom rear shock absorber, significantly improving stability and comfort both on and off road. The front forks were carefully polished to complement the clean aesthetic of the build.
Braking performance was upgraded with a Brembo RCS master cylinder and our proprietary 320 mm oversized disc conversion kit. This setup was fully homologated through the DTC, with Meister Engineering owning the Swiss certification, ensuring both exceptional stopping power and full road legality.
The result is a motorcycle that feels dramatically lighter, sharper and more confidence-inspiring than a standard R80GS.
The boxer engine was upgraded with a 1000cc conversion kit, delivering noticeably more torque and stronger acceleration throughout the rev range.
The engine itself was refinished in matte black, while the wheels received gloss black rims combined with stainless steel spokes to eliminate corrosion concerns and ensure long-term durability.
A homologated Zach exhaust system was installed together with a custom heat shield, producing the deep and unmistakable sound expected from a large-capacity BMW boxer while remaining fully road legal.
The frame was completely stripped, polished and chrome plated before assembly, creating one of the most striking visual signatures of the motorcycle.
BMW reflectors were replaced with CNC-machined BMW emblems, while the rear lighting features a distinctive circular LED design that illuminates as a glowing red ring.
Every detail was selected to support the same philosophy: reduce visual clutter, improve functionality and create a motorcycle that looks as capable as it feels.
Introduced in the early 1990s with BMW’s Paralever rear suspension system, the R80GS remains one of the most influential adventure motorcycles ever produced. Combining long-distance comfort, genuine off-road capability and the character of BMW’s air-cooled boxer engine, it became the benchmark for modern adventure bikes.
This particular project was commissioned by a long-time Meister Engineering client who has trusted us with several motorcycles over the years. Knowing exactly what is possible when performance, craftsmanship and functionality come together, he gave us a clear mission: create the ultimate minimalist rally-inspired GS.
One of the most distinctive elements of this build is the fuel tank.
A smaller and lighter tank was selected to reduce visual mass and improve agility. The central section was painted in deep black, while the knee pad area was left polished aluminium, creating a striking contrast that recalls the factory race bikes and classic Husqvarna enduro machines of the era.
Combined with the chrome-plated frame, this detail gives the motorcycle a timeless appearance that feels both vintage and modern.
The front end is dominated by the distinctive Cyclops rally headlight sourced from the United States.
Originally developed for serious adventure riding, this adjustable headlight features an integrated navigation space above the light unit, allowing the installation of traditional rally roadbooks or navigation equipment.
Its protective housing and unmistakable silhouette give the motorcycle a unique identity and immediately communicate its rally-oriented purpose.
A wide Renthal handlebar was selected to maximize leverage and rider comfort, whether navigating mountain roads or technical off-road terrain.
To further improve durability, the wiring for the mini switchgear was routed internally through the handlebar. This not only creates a cleaner appearance but also protects the electrical system during demanding off-road riding where branches and impacts can easily damage exposed cables.
The motorcycle is also equipped with compact Kellermann indicators and a Motogadget Chronoclassic instrument cluster, providing an impressive amount of information while maintaining a clean and period-correct appearance.
This R80GS combines the soul of a vintage rally machine with the performance, reliability and engineering standards expected from a modern Meister Engineering build.
Lightweight, powerful, comfortable and fully road legal, it is equally at home crossing mountain passes, exploring forest trails or simply being admired when parked. It captures everything we love about the BMW airhead platform: simplicity, character and limitless adventure.
It perfectly captures what we believe a custom Bike should be:
Elegant. Fast enough. Comfortable. And built to be ridden.
