BMW R65

Timeless Simplicity

For this project, the goal was not to create a radical custom motorcycle, but rather to distill the R65 down to its purest form. Every modification was carefully considered to remove visual clutter while preserving the timeless charm that made these early BMWs so special. The result is a bobber that feels as though it could have left a BMW design studio decades ago.

A major part of the transformation involved refinishing nearly every component of the motorcycle. The frame was powder-coated in satin black, while the wheels, final drive, exhaust system, and numerous chassis components received matching black finishes. This monochromatic treatment creates a strong visual contrast against the fuel tank and highlights the motorcycle's mechanical architecture.

Braking performance was improved through the installation of a Brembo PS master cylinder, providing significantly better feel and control while remaining visually understated. Like many of the upgrades on this motorcycle, the objective was to enhance the riding experience without compromising the vintage character of the machine.

An early BMW R65 transformed into a minimalist bobber that blends classic German engineering with a stripped-back, timeless silhouette.

The BMW R65 was introduced as the lighter and more agile member of BMW's legendary Airhead family. Equipped with its air-cooled 650cc boxer twin engine, shaft drive, and unmistakable flat-twin character, the R65 offered a unique balance between everyday usability and classic touring comfort. The pre-1980 twin-shock versions are particularly appreciated today for their clean frame lines, mechanical simplicity, and authentic vintage personality.

The rear section was completely redesigned around a minimalist single-seat configuration. The original subframe was removed and replaced with a much cleaner structure, allowing the rear shocks to become a central visual feature of the motorcycle. This modification dramatically lightens the silhouette while emphasizing the iconic boxer engine and fuel tank.

At the heart of the design sits the large turquoise fuel tank, inspired by classic BMW color schemes of the period. Combined with the original-style rubber knee pads, it creates a beautiful vintage focal point and gives the motorcycle a distinctive personality. The color choice intentionally evokes the spirit of 1970s motorcycles while remaining fresh and modern.

Modern functionality was discreetly integrated throughout the build. A Motogadget speedometer was installed to provide contemporary instrumentation without disturbing the bike's classic proportions. At the same time, the entire electrical system was rebuilt from scratch to ensure long-term reliability and a clean visual appearance.

This BMW R65 perfectly illustrates the philosophy behind many Meister Engineering creations: remove everything unnecessary, preserve everything essential, and create a motorcycle that feels both timeless and deeply personal. A clean, elegant bobber that celebrates the beauty of BMW's early Airhead era while offering the reliability and refinement expected from a modern custom build.

Less motorcycle, more soul.
