BMW R100RS
M-E 100
Born to Lead the Autobahn
For this project, we started with a late-1970s BMW R100RS originally finished in gold. While the original motorcycle was already a masterpiece of German engineering, our goal was to reinterpret its DNA through a modern café racer lens while preserving the qualities that made the RS so special. Rather than removing its fairing heritage, we decided to evolve it.
At the rear, we installed our homologated Meister Engineering bolt-on rear frame. For this build, the rear loop features a slightly sharper profile, allowing for a more dynamic café racer stance. This subtle change dramatically enhances the overall balance of the motorcycle while remaining fully road legal and reversible.
One of the most striking features of this build is the fully chromed frame. Combined with the deep gloss black bodywork and gold details, it creates a visual contrast that is both luxurious and aggressive. Every angle reveals reflections and details that highlight the craftsmanship invested throughout the project.
The wheels were completely re-engineered using lightweight Excel spoke rims. Because the original R100RS was equipped with a rear disc brake, a dedicated conversion system was developed to retain and optimize rear braking performance. Combined with upgraded brake calipers, this setup delivers a level of braking capability rarely found on classic airhead café racers.
Introduced in the late 1970s, the BMW R100RS was one of the most advanced motorcycles of its era. Widely regarded as the world's first mass-produced sport-touring motorcycle with a wind-tunnel-developed fairing, it combined long-distance comfort, high-speed stability, and the legendary reliability of BMW's air-cooled boxer twin. With its distinctive silhouette and engineering-focused philosophy, the R100RS quickly became an icon among riders seeking performance without compromise.
The entire silhouette of the motorcycle was redesigned around a new fuel tank and a custom upper fairing. Inspired by the original RS concept, the lower edge of the fairing follows the line of the tank, creating a seamless flow from front to rear. The result is a motorcycle that feels both timeless and purposeful, combining vintage racing inspiration with contemporary proportions.
The tail section is completed by a hand-crafted café racer seat and a classic racing seat cowl. Finished with elegant gold stitching, the saddle pays tribute to the golden accents found throughout the motorcycle. Integrated directly into the rear frame is a discreet LED light strip, providing modern visibility while maintaining a remarkably clean design.
Suspension and braking performance were brought firmly into the modern era through the installation of an inverted front fork conversion. Paired with upgraded brake components, larger discs and modern calipers, the motorcycle offers significantly improved stability, steering precision and stopping power compared to the original R100RS. At the rear, premium Öhlins shock absorbers ensure outstanding road holding and rider feedback.
The legendary 980cc boxer engine was fully rebuilt and refinished in matte black. To improve reliability for modern riding, the complete electrical system was redesigned from the ground up and fitted with a higher-output charging system, addressing one of the common weaknesses of pre-1980 BMW airheads. The result is a motorcycle that retains all the character of the original engine while benefiting from contemporary dependability.
Finishing touches include CNC-machined rearsets, clip-on handlebars with minimalist switchgear, dual Chronoclassic instruments and a bespoke Attaque exhaust system developed in collaboration with our partner Attaque. Featuring visible welds and a racing-inspired design, the exhaust perfectly complements the spirit of the build: a motorcycle that honours the pioneering legacy of the BMW R100RS while pushing its performance, aesthetics and riding experience into a completely new era.
