HONDA CM125

M-E 125

A humble commuter transformed into a lightweight vintage roadster.
Starting from a 1990 Honda CM125, we reimagined one of Honda’s most reliable and accessible motorcycles into a clean, timeless machine inspired by the light and minimalist motorcycles of the late 70s and early 80s. The result is a lightweight custom that remains easy to ride, affordable to maintain, and full of character.

For this build, the objective was not to create another chopper-inspired CM125, but rather a compact and elegant roadster with a more athletic stance. By revisiting the proportions of the motorcycle, we focused on achieving a cleaner silhouette, lowering the visual mass and creating a more balanced riding position.

The fuel tank, seat line and front-end geometry were carefully reworked to give the motorcycle a flatter, more dynamic profile while preserving the approachable nature that made the CM125 so successful in the first place.

A black Motogadget Tiny speedometer was selected to preserve the vintage atmosphere while offering modern reliability and precision. Combined with a Bates-style headlight and a lowered Gazzini handlebar, the cockpit remains intentionally minimalist and uncluttered..

The result is a motorcycle that feels lighter, sharper and more purposeful while remaining comfortable and easy to ride both in urban environments and on country roads.

The rear section was completely redesigned around a shortened frame, fully homologated through DTC approval for Swiss road registration.

This shortened rear frame dramatically cleans up the motorcycle's profile while maintaining full legal compliance. The new layout allows for a much more compact tail section and perfectly highlights the classic proportions of bikes.

Introduced as a simple and dependable everyday motorcycle, the Honda CM125 became one of the most successful small-displacement models of its era. Designed for new riders and daily commuters, it earned a reputation for exceptional reliability, low running costs, and an incredibly robust twin-cylinder engine.

While its original styling leaned towards the custom and small-cruiser segment, its lightweight chassis and bulletproof mechanics make it an excellent foundation for custom motorcycle projects decades later.

The engine was refinished with a combination of satin black and polished aluminum surfaces, creating a strong visual contrast that emphasizes the mechanical simplicity of Honda's twin-cylinder architecture.

The original spoked wheels were retained, perfectly matching the vintage spirit of the project. To achieve a more balanced silhouette, the rear suspension was upgraded with slightly taller shock absorbers, helping level the motorcycle and enhancing its overall stance.

The result is a motorcycle that feels lighter, sharper and more purposeful while remaining comfortable and easy to ride both in urban environments and on country roads.

What makes this project special is not extreme performance or complex technology. It is the celebration of simplicity. The Honda CM125 offers a remarkably reliable foundation, and through careful design, proportion and attention to detail, it has been transformed into a motorcycle that looks decades older—and far more exclusive—than its modest origins would suggest.

A lightweight custom roadster built to be ridden, enjoyed and admired for many years to come.
