BMW R80

M-E 103

Some motorcycles are transformed. Others are reimagined.

Before any cosmetic modifications were considered, this R80R underwent a complete mechanical overhaul. The engine, gearbox, final drive, and running gear were thoroughly inspected and serviced to ensure the motorcycle performs as beautifully as it looks. At Meister Engineering, we believe a custom motorcycle should first and foremost be a motorcycle you can confidently ride and enjoy.

One of the key features of this build is the fuel tank. Rather than retaining the original R80R tank, we fitted a BMW Series 7 tank, instantly giving the motorcycle a more timeless and elegant profile.

For the paintwork, we stayed true to BMW heritage. The fuel tank received a timeless cream-white finish accented by a delicate hand-painted pinstripe. The simplicity of this color scheme perfectly complements the classic lines of the boxer engine and creates a motorcycle that feels both elegant and understated.

One of the most noticeable upgrades is the installation of a Brembo PS brake master cylinder, fully homologated for Switzerland and available through our webshop. Combined with the R80R's dual-disc setup featuring twin four-piston calipers and floating brake discs, the braking performance is transformed. Lever feel becomes more precise, modulation improves significantly, and overall stopping power is brought up to modern standards.

To complete the build, miniature 3-in-1 rear lights were integrated into the tail section, combining tail light, brake light, and turn signals in an exceptionally discreet package. At the front, compact transparent indicators maintain the minimalist aesthetic. A brushed stainless-steel homologated exhaust system adds the finishing touch, delivering a refined boxer soundtrack while perfectly matching the motorcycle’s clean and purposeful appearance.

This R80R represents an excellent illustration of what can be achieved within a typical Meister Engineering Stage 2 project. Rather than radically transforming the motorcycle, the goal was to enhance every aspect of the original BMW—its styling, reliability, braking, and riding experience—while preserving the authenticity that makes these air-cooled boxers so special.

The BMW R80R is widely regarded as one of the finest foundations for a classic air-cooled custom motorcycle. Combining the legendary reliability of BMW’s 800cc boxer engine with a modern chassis, dual front brakes, and excellent road manners, it offers the perfect balance between vintage character and everyday usability. Its clean lines and timeless proportions make it an ideal candidate for a tasteful café racer conversion.

The wheels were fully refurbished as part of the build, bringing them back to factory-fresh condition. While many custom projects involve extensive blacking-out of components, we deliberately chose to preserve the original silver finish of the engine casings and drivetrain. This decision maintains some of the authentic BMW character and creates a beautiful contrast against the darker chassis components.

The entire electrical system was rebuilt to improve reliability and simplify maintenance. Modern wiring, upgraded components, and careful integration ensure dependable operation while maintaining the clean, minimalist appearance expected from a high-end custom motorcycle.

The cockpit was redesigned around a Daytona Velona speedometer, chosen for its compact dimensions and classic appearance. A Renthal handlebar provides a comfortable and highly maneuverable riding position, making the motorcycle equally enjoyable on winding back roads and in urban environments. The result is a riding experience that feels natural, intuitive, and confidence-inspiring.

This motorcycle features our plug&play seat, available directly through our webshop. Unlike our fully bespoke saddles, which are individually shaped to match a specific fuel tank, this seat is designed as a ready-to-install solution that fits at its front neatly under the tank and can be mounted with minimal modifications. It offers an excellent option for riders who want to build their own custom project while retaining a professional finish.

At the rear, the original subframe was replaced with our homologated rear loop. Fully registered and approved for roads, this modification gives the motorcycle a much cleaner and sportier silhouette while remaining perfectly legal. The result is a significantly lighter visual appearance without compromising practicality or safety.

The result is a timeless café racer that looks as though BMW could have built it themselves.
