Copper Nexus

A tribute to craftsmanship, precision, and the art of turning industrial materials into rolling sculpture.

From the outset, the vision was clear: create something truly extraordinary by combining deep matte black finishes with warm copper accents. Every originally grey component was refinished in satin black, including the engine, gearbox, final drive, brake calipers, and Hattech exhaust system. The result is a dramatic contrast that highlights the mechanical architecture of the boxer engine while providing the perfect backdrop for the copper details that define the entire motorcycle.

The centerpiece of the build is undoubtedly the fuel tank. Using genuine copper leaf, a custom geometric pattern was created by hand across the tank's black surface. The design draws direct inspiration from the spoke layout of the wheels, creating a visual triangulation between the front wheel, rear wheel, and fuel tank. The intersecting lines vary in size and proportion, giving the motorcycle a sense of movement and cohesion from every angle while maintaining a refined and architectural appearance.

To complement the unique aesthetic, the chassis received a complete café racer transformation. An inverted front fork dramatically modernizes the front end while improving handling precision. Clip-on handlebars create a purposeful riding position, while the LED headlight features a custom copper-finished bezel that mirrors the copper detailing found throughout the motorcycle. Even the Bonamici-style fuel cap and numerous machined components were specially treated to maintain consistency across the entire build.

The foundation of this project is the legendary BMW R100, one of the last great air-cooled boxer twins from the 1980s. Renowned for its reliability, mechanical simplicity, and effortless long-distance capability, the R100 remains one of the most iconic motorcycles ever produced by BMW. Its timeless proportions and unmistakable boxer engine made it the perfect canvas for a build designed to push the boundaries of custom craftsmanship while preserving the soul of the original machine.

Working with copper, however, is far more challenging than simply applying a decorative finish. Copper naturally oxidizes and eventually develops a green patina. To preserve its distinctive rose-gold appearance, each treated component required a highly specialized process involving multiple layers of preparation, plating, sealing, and protection. Timing was critical throughout the project, with each stage needing to be completed within precise windows to ensure the finish would remain stable and retain its unique metallic glow for years to come.

The attention to detail extends far beyond the paintwork. The BMW emblems themselves were carefully modified so that every chrome element became copper-toned, seamlessly integrating them into the overall design language. Similar treatment was applied to the engine fins and numerous mechanical details throughout the motorcycle. These subtle touches required countless hours of meticulous work but ultimately transformed the motorcycle from a custom build into a fully unified design object where every component speaks the same visual language.

At the rear, discreet 3-in-1 LED indicators keep the lines clean and uncluttered, while YSS shock absorbers provide modern suspension performance. The minimalist café racer seat emphasizes the elegant proportions of the frame and allows the copper-plated chassis to remain fully visible. This motorcycle was produced as part of an exclusive series of only two machines: one finished in copper and its sister bike finished in chrome silver, making each an exceptionally rare interpretation of the classic BMW boxer platform.

Copper Nexus is more than a custom motorcycle—it is a study in material, contrast, and precision, where engineering and craftsmanship converge to create a machine unlike any other.
