The BMW R80RT: A Touring Icon Reimagined
The transformation began with a complete visual blackout treatment. The wheels, engine, swingarm and final drive were refinished in black, creating a stronger and more modern contrast against the bodywork. This approach visually lowers the motorcycle and emphasizes the iconic boxer engine architecture while giving the bike a far more purposeful stance.
To sharpen the proportions, we installed our homologated shortened rear subframe, fully approved for road use. Combined with a handcrafted seat featuring diamond-pattern stitching, the new rear section dramatically cleans up the silhouette while maintaining everyday usability. Every line of the motorcycle was redesigned to create a more compact and balanced profile.
Originally introduced as a long-distance touring motorcycle, the BMW R80RT combined the legendary reliability of BMW’s air-cooled boxer engine with comfort and practicality. Built for covering thousands of kilometers in all weather conditions, it became one of the most recognizable BMW motorcycles of the 1980s. For this project, however, we wanted to strip away the touring character and reveal a much lighter, more aggressive café racer-inspired personality.
The custom paintwork features a deep electric blue finish accented by subtle grey pinstripes. To complement the vintage-inspired aesthetic, the original fuel cap was replaced with a classic Monza-style cap. Together with the Firestone Deluxe tires, these details create the impression of a motorcycle sketched around oversized tires, giving it a timeless custom-built character.
At the front, the suspension was lowered and fitted with fork gaiters to reinforce the classic café racer stance. A large clear-lens headlight was mounted using vintage BMW Series 5 and Series 6 style headlight brackets, adding visual mass to the front end while preserving an authentic BMW heritage look. The result is a front profile that feels both muscular and elegant.
Performance and functionality were upgraded throughout the build. The complete electrical system was redesigned around a Motogadget Chronoclassic 80 mm analog speedometer, combining classic styling with modern technology. Braking performance was significantly improved with a Brembo PS master cylinder, while homologated Hattech exhausts — for which Meister Engineering is the Swiss importer — provide a refined boxer soundtrack. At the rear, the taillight is seamlessly integrated into the rear loop, complemented by discreet mini indicators positioned close to the YSS shock absorbers, another premium brand proudly imported by Meister Engineering for the Swiss market.
